Sir:-

On the receipt of your letter 12359 of the 17th ultimo, regarding the circulation of the British dollar in China, a copy of the despatch of March 8th from the Governor of Hongkong inclosed in that letter, was forwarded to the Treasury.

I am directed by Secretary Sir Edward Grey to transmit to you herewith, to be laid before the Secretary of State for the Colonies, a copy of the answer from that Department.

It will be seen that the Treasury recommend a renewal of the agreement for the coinage of British dollars by India at a Two per cent seigniorage which they consider to be a reasonable charge on the part of the Bombay Mint.

I am to suggest that the view taken by the Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.
